Diamondbacks forced to start the season with a new face at closer

Acquired at last season's trade deadline in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, Sewald went 0-1 with a 3.57 ERA and converted 13 out of 15 save opportunities in 20 games with the Diamondbacks. 

Helping the Diamondbacks go on a magical run to the World Series last season, Sewald was expected to be a lockdown closer in Arizona this season and even got his own entrance that will debut when he returns this season. 

The righty tried to pitch through the discomfort, but after a recent outing he decided it was best to get an MRI.

During his seven-year career, Sewald has a 19-23 record with a 4.06 ERA and has gone 68-88 on save opportunities as a member of the Mariners, Diamondbacks and New York Mets.

While the 33-year-old righty is on the shelf, relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel figures to get the first shot and the closer role.

Ginkel had the best season of his career in 2023, going 9-1 with a 2.48 ERA while striking out 70 batters in 65.1 innings pitched.

The 30-year-old right-hander was four for six on saves last year, while his Diamondbacks teammate reliever Miguel Castro converted seven of his 11 save opportunities but wasn't as successful on the mound (6-6, 4.31 ERA).

In a loaded National League West division, the Diamondbacks will need Ginkel to continue pitching like he has over the last two seasons. Making 90 appearances with a 10-2 record and a 2.76 ERA, Ginkel allowed only four home runs in 94.2 innings pitched during that time. 

Look for the Diamondbacks to be all hands on deck if Ginkel falters to open the season.
